Counted, not tracked.
Sill counts how many people use it — once a day, anonymously — and anyone can see the totals.
This page lists everything that is sent, everything that is never sent, and how the counting works. The totals are public at the statistics dashboard.
What is sent
At most one small message per calendar day, on the first real use of that day (opening Sill’s panel, dropping something on the notch or opening Quick Capture — not merely having it running). This is the whole message:
{
"schema": 1,
"day": "2026-10-08",
"nonce": "Hc2m0Q-rT9_zLk41pWbN6e",
"app": "1.5.0",
"macos": "26.5",
"chip": "M1 Pro",
"installAge": "7",
"gap": "1",
"streak": "2-6",
"active7": "6",
"active28": "4-7",
"firstOfWeek": false,
"firstOfMonth": false
}
| Field | Meaning | Values |
|---|---|---|
schema | Message format version | 1 |
day | Your Mac’s local calendar date | YYYY-MM-DD |
nonce | Random, new every day; lets the server ignore a retried duplicate | 22 random characters, never reused |
app | Sill version | e.g. 1.5.0 |
macos | macOS version, major.minor | e.g. 26.5 |
chip | Chip family | M1…M19 with Pro/Max/Ultra, Apple silicon, Intel |
installAge | Days since install, bucketed | 0, 1, 2-6, 7 … 180+ |
gap | Days since your previous active day | first, 1, 2-3 … 31+ |
streak | Consecutive active days, today included | 1, 2-6, 7-14, 15-29, 30+ |
active7 | Active days in the last 7 | 1…7 |
active28 | Active days in the last 28 | 1, 2-3 … 21-28 |
firstOfWeek | First counted day of this week | true / false |
firstOfMonth | First counted day of this month | true / false |
Every value comes from a closed list or a strict pattern. The app can’t put free text into the message, and the server refuses any message with an unknown field or an unexpected value. Streaks and activity are worked out on your Mac from a short list of the days you used Sill; only the buckets above leave it.
What is never sent
- Any identifier that lasts longer than a day — no install ID, account, hardware ID, serial number or MAC address
- Your IP address — it is never read or stored, and request logs are off
- File names, paths, or anything you drop on the notch
- Your notes, clipboard, calendar, music or notifications
- App names, window titles, URLs
- Times finer than the date; location, locale, language, time zone
How the counting works
The counting service keeps only running totals — “on 2026-10-08, one more active user; one more on version 1.5.0; one more with a 2–6 day streak”. Individual messages are not stored. The daily nonce is kept for at most 48 hours to drop duplicate retries, then deleted.
From those totals come daily, weekly and monthly active users, new and returning users, retention, and the spread of versions, macOS releases and chips. In the public numbers, nothing describes fewer than 5 Macs: every count is 0 or at least 5, and a version, macOS release or chip is named only once at least 5 Macs reported it on the same day. Everything rarer is grouped into “other”.
Turning it off
Settings ▸ About ▸ Share anonymous usage statistics. When it’s off, Sill sends nothing at all — not a reduced message, not a queued one. Development builds never send.
